1991/92

Ah, it must’ve been the 1990s was it? Of course it was because that’s when clubs across the world decided they could wear any old nonsense and Darlington were no different, wearing this tosh for two whole seasons.

Having very successfully used yellow as our ‘trim’ colour for a few years, as Division Four champions Quakers instead chose blue for to greet their return to Division Three in 91/92…and were swiftly relegated as bottom of the table.

Was also worn in 92/93 when Kevan Smith’s mate Billy McEwan took charge. ‘The greatest manager this club has ever had’, he once was supposed to have said of himself. Humble fella.

former youth team player Richard Cooper (I think) in the 91/92 away kit. Trophy was won in some pre-season youth tournament in Holland.

Away

Don’t think the kit designer wasted too much of his coffee-break dreaming up this one did he? But this one proves that not all kits have to be multi-coloured and full of zig-zags to be any good, just a pity Darlington didn’t lend some of that sobriety to the crazy home kit.

Pale blue shirt, pale blue shorts and pale blue socks – dead simple and a decent kit. But it was a little too close for comfort to Hartlepool’s colours.

Worn in March ’92 during a shock 1-0 win at Bradford City, them considered a big club and us sitting rock-bottom of the table, thanks to a Steve O’Shaughnessy goal.

Third

A red version of the pale blue away kit and hardly worn during its sole season of ‘use’.

Although it did get an airing in March ’92 for a 2-0 defeat at Hartlepool when dear ol’ Kevan Smith had a bit of a ‘mare.

That shirt is currently not among the collection and as yet pictures have been difficult to obtain so can anyone out there oblige either count?
